The Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards identify projects that simultaneously address climate change, support local communities and smallholders, and conserve biodiversity.

Sustainable development in all parts of the world involves land management. When carefully designed, land management projects can improve livelihoods, create employment, protect traditional cultures and endangered species, help secure tenure to lands and resources, increase the resiliency of ecosystems and help to combat climate change. The CCB Standards can be applied to any land management project, including projects under the VCS Program, to certify such climate, community, and biodiversity benefits.

Almost 200 projects have been validated to the CCB Standards, over 50 of which have achieved full verification. CCB projects span over 60 countries on every continent except Antarctica. Projects validated and verified to the CCB Standards encompass more than 10 million hectares, an area the size of Iceland.

The CCB Standards are the leading standard used in conjunction with VCS agriculture, forestry and land use (AFOLU) projects, commanding preferential market access. The standards can be applied to all types of land management project, including reforestation, afforestation, revegetation, forest restoration, agroforestry, sustainable agriculture, and other land management.

LCFP is implemented in partnership with the following Chiefdoms: Chitungulu Chiefdom, Nsefu Chiefdom, Jumbe Chiefdom, Mnkhanya Chiefdom, Malama Chiefdom, Msoro Chiefdom, Sandwe Chiefdom, Luembe Chiefdom, Nyalugwe Chiefdom, Shikabeta Chiefdom, Mpanshya Chiefdom, Mwanya Chiefdom, Mphuka Chiefdom, Mburuma Chiefdom.

Together with Barotse Royal Establishment in Western Province, BCP is launching the Kafue-Zambezi Community REDD+ Project.

Since 2012, BCP has partnered with the Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs to engage meaningfully with traditional authority institutions in Chiefdoms where REDD+ may be a viable land-use activity. The Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs is responsible for preserving Zambia’s cultural heritage by developing policies, programs and building the capacity of Chiefs and artists.

An estimated 60% of Zambia’s population depends on subsistence farming for their livelihoods, while globally, subsistence farming accounts for 48% of the world’s deforestation! Many farmers in Zambia still use the traditional ‘slash and burn’ method of farming, which is detrimental to our forests, as it drives the progressive clearing of forests over time for agriculture use. The REDD+ model creates a real opportunity to build a sustainable economy that provides alternative revenue for people so that they do not need to rely on the forests, the illegal wildlife trade, or on tourism to survive.

Department of National Parks and Wildlife, formerly known as Zambia Wildlife Authority, is mandated under the Zambia Wildlife Act of 2015 to manage and conserve Zambia’s wildlife; its national parks and game management areas, which cover 31 percent of the country’s landmass. Department of National Parks and Wildlife endeavors to integrate the wildlife policy with economic, environmental, and social policies to ensure effective contribution to sustainable national development. BCP and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate, develop and implement REDD+ Zones in ecosystems adjacent or including protected areas.

The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Lands, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection is responsible for the management of forest resources in Zambia. The Forestry Department’s mandate includes management of state forest reserves and the enforcement of national regulations related to the use and harvesting of forest resources on state and customary lands. Other functions include: providing guidelines and supervision for the management, restoration and establishment of forests, as well as facilitating and regulating forest industries, providing extension services and research. The Forestry Department is the main implementing body of REDD+ activities in Zambia. As such BCP works very closely with the Forestry Department in all stages of its REDD+ project development and implementation through a signed MoU.

One of Zambia’s finest open game ranches where animals roam freely in an unfenced area covering over 12,000 hectares of land and over 20km’s of the mighty Luangwa River.

Renowned for its extraordinary beauty and varied habitats the Luangwa Valley supports one of Africa’s richest concentrations of wildlife and birds. Dry sandy riverbeds, streams, and lagoons create the ideal habitat for game hunting. The fauna on this property is extremely varied and most of the species, with the exception of the elephants and the wild dogs, are the exclusive property of Pia Manzi Private Game Reserve. The property is a rich fishing ground in the Luangwa River, the marine life includes the famous tigerfish.

Munyamadzi offers safaris in the Lower Luangwa Valley – remote and untamed wilderness – where your safari directly contributes to conservation and community projects. BCP regularly partners with Munyamadzi to undertake the relocation and restoration of wildlife in the Lower Luangwa Valley. In 2021 BCP supported Munyamadzi’s efforts to relocate a number of Sable antelope from Choma to the Reserve.

This private reserve area of approximately 420 square kilometers is located in the Luangwa Valley neighboring West Petauke G.M.A., the Muchinga Escarpment, and the life-giving Luangwa River. BCP works with Nyamvu Game Reserve through resource protection in the REDD+ zones.

This private game area is approximately 550 square kilometers in size. Located in the Luangwa Valley bordering the Southern boundary of the South Luangwa National Park, the Chisomo Game Management Area, the Luangwa River, and the Muchinga Escarpment. BCP works with Nyakolwe Game Reserve through resource protection in the REDD+ zones.

The Charities Aid Foundation, is a registered UK charity that operates in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Canada. It works with companies, private philanthropists, regular donors, fellow foundations, governments, charities, and not-for-profit enterprises to enable them to give more. Mills (through CAF) currently supports BCP with funding towards resource protection and biodiversity monitoring. Funding is delivered through Charities Aid Foundation.

Explorers-at-Large Dereck and Beverly Joubert and the National Geographic Society founded the Big Cats Initiative in 2009 as an effort to halt the decline of big cats in the wild. The Jouberts are globally known conservationists and filmmakers who have been working to help save big cats, other key wildlife species, and their habitats for over 30 years.

Since then, the National Geographic Society’s Big Cats Initiative has supported more than 80 scientists, conservationists, storytellers, and educators working to protect big cats in the wild.

The planet’s human population increases by more than 200,000 people every day. At the same time, global consumption and inequality are rising. As a result, our planetary footprint is unsustainable, with ever more severe and intensifying pressure on finite natural resources throughout the world. The resulting environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and climate change destroy nature and impacts human well-being. The mission of the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) is to achieve practical solutions to conservation problems through original scientific research. Their research is used worldwide to advise environmental policy-makers.

The Darwin Initiative is a UK government grants scheme that helps to protect biodiversity and the natural environment through locally based projects worldwide.

The Nature Conservancy is a global environmental nonprofit working to create a world where people and nature can thrive. Founded at its grassroots in the United States in 1951, The Nature Conservancy has grown to become one of the most effective and wide-reaching environmental organizations in the world. TNC impact conservation in 79 countries and territories across six continents. In 2020 BCP partnered with PPF, ENI, and TNC to undertake a feasibility study to expand into Kafue National Park in Western Province. BCP’s partnership with TNC follows nature-based solutions to protect and restore existing African dryland forests while building the resilience of some of the most vulnerable communities in the region through sustainable livelihood initiatives, which provide long-term and climate-smart revenue streams. Musika is an independent Zambian non-profit company affiliated to the Zambia National Farmers Union and is supported by the Swedish Embassy in Zambia to provide world-class business development services to Zambia’s agricultural markets to deepen and broaden the impact of economic growth to all levels of rural society. While Musika works with all stakeholders in the agricultural market, its primary clients are the private sector entities in the agricultural market system – ranging from multinational corporations to micro-entrepreneur service providers – that are committed to working with the rural poor as their suppliers, consumers, clients or employees. Through technical support and a range of smart, catalytic investments, Musika stimulates and deepens commercial market engagement with the rural poor and seeks to fundamentally change the way agricultural markets benefit the smallholder sector.

Peace Parks Foundation facilitates the establishment of trans-frontier conservation areas (peace parks) and develops human resources, thereby supporting sustainable economic development, the conservation of biodiversity, and regional peace and stability. The southern African region currently hosts 18 peace parks, with Peace Parks Foundation actively involved in the establishment and development of ten of them covering one million square kilometers. In 2020 BCP partnered with PPF, ENI, and TNC to undertake a feasibility study to expand into Kafue National Park in Western Province. Eni has partnered with BCP to Luangwa Community Forests Project, a REDD+ Project in the Luangwa Valley, Zambia. The 20-year agreement signed by the parties, relative to the purchasing of carbon credits of Verified Carbon Standard and Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard, aims to contribute to the success of this REDD+ Project on a long-term basis, pursuing most of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
